Moufang-like conditions for generalized quadrangles and classification of all finite quasi-transitive generalized quadrangles

چکیده
We tell the history ofMoufang generalized quadrangles. We review someMoufang-like conditions, and classify finite quasi-transitive generalized quadrangles. These are generalized quadrangles so that for any two non-concurrent linesU,V of theGQ, and for someW ∈ {U,V }⊥, the group of generalized homologies with axes U and V acts transitively on the points ofW incident with neither U nor V. As a by-product of the proof, we will show, without the classification of finite simple groups, that a finite generalized quadrangle that admits a BN-pair of rank 2 is classical or dual classical if and only if it admits at least one nontrivial homology (!). © 2005 Published by Elsevier B.V. Geometric Characterizations of Finite Chevalley Groups of Type B2
Finite Moufang generalized quadrangles were classified in 1974 as a corollary to the classification of finite groups with a split BN-pair of rank 2, by P. Fong and G. M. Seitz (1973), (1974). Later on, work of S. E. Payne and J. A. Thas culminated in an almost complete, elementary proof of that classification; see Finite Generalized Quadrangles, 1984. Using slightly more group theory, first W. ...
متن کاملLocal Sharply Transitive Actions on Finite Generalized Quadrangles
We classify the finite generalized quadrangles containing a line L such that some group of collineations acts sharply transitively on the ordered pentagons which start with two points of L. This can be seen as a generalization of a result of Thas and the second author [22] classifying all finite generalized quadrangles admitting a collineation group that acts transitively on all ordered pentago...
متن کاملAutomorphisms and characterizations of finite generalized quadrangles
Our paper surveys some new developments in the theory of automorphisms and characterizations of finite generalized quadrangles. It is the purpose to mention important new results which did not appear in the following standard works (or surveys) on the subject: Collineations of finite generalized quadrangles (S. E. Payne, 1983), Finite Generalized Quadrangles (S. E. Payne and J. A. Thas, 1984), ...
متن کاملGeneralized Quadrangles Weakly Embedded of Degree 2 in Projective Space
In this paper, we classify all generalized quadrangles weakly embedded of degree 2 in projective space. More exactly, given a (possibly infinite) generalized quadrangle Γ = (P,L, I ) and a map π from P (respectively L) to the set of points (respectively lines) of a projective space PG(V ), V a vector space over some skew field (not necessarily finite-dimensional), such that: (i) π is injective ...
متن کاملSolution of a Question of Knarr
The Moufang condition is one of the central group theoretical conditions in Incidence Geometry, and was introduced by Jacques Tits in his famous lecture notes (1974). About ten years ago, Norbert Knarr studied generalized quadrangles (buildings of Type B2) which satisfy one of the Moufang conditions locally at one point. He then posed the fundamental question whether the group generated by the ...
